absolutely nothing that couldn't have been surmised from the footage from events

no single player mode beyond grand prix and looking for unlockable kart decals in free roam

i was hoping for one more thing to justify the price (single player campaign, free updates) but nah it was just greed and driving people toward the bundle

bill trinen should not have urged critics of the price to wait for the direct, i understand he couldn't say "nah dude we're taking the piss" but using the pricing concerns as a springboard to shill the direct set expectations they were never going to meet with that showing

nintendo's unforced PR blunders in the wake of the switch 2 reveal are starting to stack up but i doubt they'll make any meaningful difference outside of donnie making consoles and games unaffordable

i mean assuming the bundle price remains within 100 dollars of the previously announced price im gonna panic buy that shit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think the game looks fun and probably would have enough single player content for me but it's not going to sell me on the console. The price of the game isn't just $90 it's $90+$450.

The Switch didn't have much at launch either but they revealed several first party titles that came out in the following months. Where is that for the Switch 2? Are they just banking on MKW, MP4, and dlc upgrades to carry it for its first year?

It's just so sad because all the pieces are here. Instead of picking the next cup on a menu, I want to drive to the starting track and honk at a Toad at a registration booth. It would be fun to get distracted by collectibles while driving to the next cup instead just deliberating selecting the fuck around mode. You could even have a fast travel menu to serve as a traditional cup selection for players who don't want to explore or for multiplayer sessions

Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong, and Prime 4 are their first party heavy hitters. I honestly think it's quite a strong lineup, just the price increase on games is dogshit (as we've gone over plenty)

Donkey Kong looks like a mixed bag for multiple reasons, but it definitely got a lot of work put into it one way or the other. Donkey Kong USED to sell gangbusters, but they completely changed his image and everything else about the gameplay so who knows with this one.

i agree with kyle tbh. i think the only reason i can think of at least to get a switch 2 Soon would be fomo over the price possibly going up after the initial launch. mario kart looks good but i can just get metroid for my switch 1.

cool bits of footage from the latest press event. the game looks fucking sweet, the music sounds fantastic. I love all the incidental music we've gotten due to free roam and i love that that music pulls from the entire expanded mario universe

finally played the game for a couple of hours, here are my thots

game makes kind of a lukewarm first impression until you start getting a handle on the new mechanics, its hard to go from the spectacle of mario kart 8's zero gravity track design to something a bit more grounded without it coming off as a regression, but once you start thinking with boost jumps and grind rails you start to see the possibilities. ive seen cpus in 150cc take routes i never would have thought of

i was worried grind rails without some sort of balancing mechanic would be too mindless, but you aren't safe while you're on the rails. items coming up behind you was expected, what wasn't expected was getting your ass knocked off by someone going faster than you. i also appreciate the fact that rails aren't terribly magnetic, it takes some precision to mount them, i was also worried that rails on the ground would be sticky but you only really catch on to them while driving parallel to them

im slightly disappointed you don't get another second or two on wall rides, i believe if you charge your boost jump you get more time on walls but otherwise if you don't hop off quick you'll slide to the ground. you can wall ride on passing trucks and buses like i was hoping you could and it feels awesome every time

i don't mind the intermission tracks, they were easily the biggest punching bag prior to launch and i don't think they're as bad as people were worried they were going to be

the online lobby for randoms is free mode as well, nintendo only demonstrated it with friends so i was worried they had something a bit more pathetic in mind, but nope, instead of spectating a race you can fuck around the open world until the next race is ready to begin. after a race concludes you're let loose with the other players back into the world until the next race starts (i wonder if you can see races while they're happening or if you're in the free roam by yourself until the next course, probably the latter)

the biggest disappointment for me is that the free roam does not serve as a hub for grand prix, knock out tours, time trials, etc. obviously people who hate fun would be able to select what they want from a menu, but the option to drive to the next grand prix would have been a more natural time to explore for p-switches, panels, and peach medallions. as it is now its kind of like if you had to choose an separate option on the main menu of BotW to hunt for korok seeds where you cannot progress the story, just seems silly

thankfully panels and peach medallions can also be found in online lobbies, but expectedly p-switches are free roam only

oh, and as for the switch 2 itself goes its just a better switch, i was expecting the novelty to wear off quickly but it happened even quicker than I was expecting, just kind of feels like the switch ive had for eight years had a growth spurt

honestly the most novel part of the switch 2 is seeing unpatched switch 1 games run better, anything with uncapped framerates and dynamic resolutions is a done deal, it's pretty sweet

the biggest pain point for me right now, and the main thing keeping the switch 2 from being a straight upgrade is file sizes and microSD express storage capacity. i feared before launch that 250 GB would go as fast today as 32 GB went in 2017, and that is absolutely the case. its hard to go from being able to store 90% of my games on a single microSD to like 30%, even lexar's 1tb card wouldn't cut it with switch 2 upgrades bumping up switch file sizes, we need 2tb microSD express cards yesterday

Hmm I thought the open world would be like a "next race starts in X minutes" and you can do whatever as long as you get to the next race's starting line on time

It's fun. Feels like Mario Kart. The controls seem to be dialed in a little better every generation. Bikes have tight enough turns that they actually handle close to the way I want a vehicle to handle in these games. I need to figure out how the jumping and wall riding work

Still need to play more of it, but it seems there's plenty here and plenty of room to expand in future updates. I do hope they add multiplayer open world unless I just missed it somehow
